Description: Dennis is a charming African Grey with a gentle nature and a growing confidence. He is hand‑tame, enjoys human company, and once he trusts you, he loves to sit on your shoulder or potter around near your feet. He has been in three homes, with his last owner having him for 18 months before health issues led to his surrender.

Temperament & Behaviour
General temperament: Very good all‑round.

Handling: Hand‑tame and also stick‑trained for step‑up.

Strangers: Initially shy but will take treats from new people.

Vocalisation: Whistles, says “good boy”, “come on then”, “no”, and a few unclear words.

Nipping: May give the occasional nip if stressed, especially around travel cages.

Phobias: None observed.

Household noises: Fine with hoovers, dogs barking, and people moving around.

Separation: No signs of stress. He is used to the radio being on when left alone.

Daily Routine

  • 6:00 am: Wakes and chats quietly for attention.

  • 6:00–8:30 am: Breakfast and out‑of‑cage time.

  • Daytime: In cage while carer is at work.

  • 4:30 pm onwards: Out of cage again, interaction, and training.

  • 5:30 pm: Evening feed.

  • 8:00 pm: Puts himself to bed.

Diet

  • Morning: Chop mixed with a small amount of seed or pine nuts to encourage eating.

  • Dry mix: Johnson & Jeff African Grey Low Sunflower Seed Mix.

  • Pellets: Being introduced gradually (ground with pestle and mortar).

  • Vegetables: Enjoys cooked sweet potato.

  • Fruit: Occasional grape (quartered).

  • High‑value treat: Small walnut pieces.

    Training & Enrichment

    • Learns quickly with walnut rewards.

    • Enjoys shredding toys, wood danglers, and toilet roll tubes stuffed with treats.

    • Loves being sprayed with a water bottle for showers.

    • Responds to whistles and will fly to your arm when called.

    Sleep

    • Sleeps from around 8 pm to 6 am.

    • Not currently covered at night.

    Social & Environmental Compatibility

    • Children: Possibly suitable with older, calm children.

    • Other birds: Not used to other birds.

    • Other pets: Comfortable with dogs when he is safely inside his cage.

    • Carer preference: No preference.

    Ideal Home

    Dennis would make a wonderful companion for someone living alone or a family with older children. He thrives on interaction, enjoys training, and will actively seek out his chosen humans once bonded. He needs a home that can offer consistent routine, enrichment, and plenty of out‑of‑cage time.
