Description: Mango – Assessment Update

STILL UNDER ASSESSMENT

Mango is making steady progress and showing more of her personality every day. She is a young bird with a big character, and much of our work with her focuses on teaching boundaries, building trust, and helping her develop healthier behaviors.

Training & Behavior Work

We are currently working on several key areas:

  • Boundaries & Step‑Up Manners: Mango has a habit of jumping up rather than stepping up when asked. We are teaching her to wait for the cue and step up calmly instead of launching herself.

  • Screaming: Mango is very vocal, especially when left. She can be extremely loud, so we are working on reducing attention‑seeking screaming by:

    • Not responding while she is screaming

    • Reassuring her verbally from a distance so she knows she hasn’t been abandoned

    • Rewarding her with treats when she is quiet and calm This consistency is already helping her understand that quiet behaviour gets positive attention.

  • Beak Pressure: Mango doesn’t bite with intent, but she can chomp down hard. With a beak capable of 500–2000 psi, poor pressure control could easily bruise or break skin. We are actively teaching her gentle beak use to prevent this becoming a problem as she matures.

  • Vocabulary Development: Mango is starting to pick up new words, which will help redirect some of her vocal energy away from screaming and into communication.

Social Preferences

Mango is beginning to show who she feels comfortable with. At the moment she is not keen on men, and may fluff up or lunge slightly when approached by one. We are working on this with positive reinforcement so she learns that men are not a threat. Given her young age, this should be very manageable with continued training.

Handling & Touch

Mango is learning to accept gentle touch. She enjoys having her feet played with, but is unsure about contact elsewhere. This is improving slowly, and we are seeing small positive changes every day as her confidence grows.

Feathers & Grooming

Mango’s wings were previously clipped incorrectly, leaving them in poor condition. We are supporting healthy regrowth with:

  • Frequent showers (which she absolutely loves)

  • Enrichment to reduce feather chewing

  • Redirection to appropriate chew toys when she starts chewing herself

This will take time, but she is responding well.

Overall Progress

Despite the challenges, Mango is doing brilliantly. She is bright, eager to learn, and full of character. With consistent training, patience, and the right future home, she will continue to flourish.
