Rehoming your parrot safely.
Did you know a high percentage of parrots are re-sold within the first two years of purchase? This is usually due to – impulse purchasing, lack of knowledge or research, insufficient time with bird, experience to deal with an issue which might arise with adolescence or general behavioural problems.
Often chicks are taken from the nest at 2 to 3 weeks of age for hand-rearing, a practice that is now banned in the Netherlands. In extreme cases this can lead to imprinting where young birds believe they are human which can lead to lack of social skills they would have learnt from their parents. One of the main causes to various behavioural problems such as screaming, over-bonding, feather destruction, biting to list a few.
Parrots which come into ‘ASP’ are carefully placed with one of our safe houses. Whilst with the SH the following is assessed; their needs and behaviour traits. As well as conversion onto a healthy diet (if required) plus ensuring health conditions are addressed by an avian/zoological vet; before being put up for rehoming.
You will need to have a home check prior to adopting a parrot from All Star Parrots. This is an informal visit from one of the team. They will fill out a form and ask you a few questions. This is also a great opportunity to ask questions and get information about anything that you unsure of. All ASP team members will have a id card to show you when they arrive.
Our parrots are matched to the most suitable adoption home, it is not a first come first served basis. Parrots have different requirements which are taken into consideration. All adopted birds remain within the support care of ‘ASP’ for life. As a charity we do not permit breeding from any of our birds. The Parrots rehoming service is free to use.
