Name: Pigeon

Species: Blue Fronted Amazon

Description: Pigeon, a blue-fronted Amazon, is approximately 3.5 years old and displays female hormonal behaviors, leading to the assumption that she is female, although not confirmed through DNA testing. Despite not showing a clear preference for male or female, Pigeon has had female owners but has been exposed to males in the household and has been a beloved member of her adoptive home for 2 years. However, due to circumstances involving other dogs and cats in the household, it has become necessary for Pigeon to find a forever home where she can receive dedicated care.

Although Pigeon is fearless around other animals, she is wary of human hands and prefers not to be handled. Over the past 2 years, a bond of trust has been established, with Pigeon now comfortable flying onto her owner’s forearm (for a walnut treat!) after working her way up from landing on a stick.

Pigeon can vocalize phrases like ‘hello’, ‘who’s a pretty girl’, ‘peekaboo’, ‘thank you baby’, ‘mwah’, and wolf whistles. During a brief stay with other parrots, she seemed to enjoy the company of fellow birds.

She resides in a spacious rainforest cage, and her owner wishes for her to remain in this familiar environment where she has ample room to move around and feel content. Pigeon delights in seeing herself in the mirror, engages in self-conversations, and loves to show off. She thrives on interacting with humans through play, conversation, and exploration, displaying a curious nature. Despite her aversion to physical touch due to lack of early handling and socialization, Pigeon enjoys shredding and chewing on various items like cardboard, toilet rolls, and paper. Her favorite treats include bananas, apples and grapes (any sweet fruit really!) and she is fed a diet of fresh chop and Harrisons Adult Lifetime Coarse Pellets. She likes to be spritzed with water from a spray bottle for a bath and will open her wings up so you can get underneath, and then will preen herself. Pigeon is most active and social in the mornings (she politely waits for the household to be up before you will hear this little endearing “helllooo?” coming from her cage and she puts herself to bed around 9.30pm at night and is silent throughout the night. She is a dream housemate.

Her personality is truly captivating, from the way she times her sounds and greetings to her playful antics like hanging upside down and making eye contact. She delights in mimicking your gestures and sounds, such as spreading her arms like wings and saying “erp,” then waiting for you to do the same. This interactive exchange is one of her favourite games.
